Always Be My Maybe offers some well-executed variety on the formulaic Pinoy romcom.

Gerald Anderson and Arci Muñoz play Jake and Tintin respectively, two yuppies dealing with bad breakups who quickly become friends.  They bond over rants about their exes and failed attempts at trying to set each other up with new people.  Over the course of the film, the romantic and sexual tension between them builds until they must decide whether they’re hanging out, hooking up, or pursuing a serious relationship.

Ever since The Breakup Playlist, Dan Villegas has been on a short list of rom-com directors whose work exudes originality in content and structure. He made us reminisce on past romances in The Breakup Playlist and learn when to let go and love again in English Only, Please. In his 2015 MMFF entry, #WalangForever, it would seem that he still strives to achieve novelty in his narrative. The only difference of this new film from the others is that it struggles to find a consistent ambiance and a believable story that could merit itself a Best Film Award.

The Breakup Playlist exhibits the journey of Philippine Cinema – struggling between looking for what is financially stable and striving for an outstanding content.Slide1

We wish to spare you from the discussion of film criticism or lectures of the history of Philippine cinema, yet, we cannot help but see this Star Cinema’s newest as an ideal piece for deconstruction and rationalization.

At the big screen, we see the marriage of two worlds – that of the independent film and of the mainstream media. On one side, The Breakup Playlist was released by Star Cinema, the country’s largest motion picture company. On the other hand, it was directed by Dan Villegas (best known for his low-budget yet award-winning English Only Please) and written by Antoinette Jadaone (debuted on her trending That Thing Called Tadhana) both of whom started in the world of Independent Philippine Cinema.
