Mila is a timeless piece of art that leaves valuable lessons not only to its audience but to filmmakers alike. Through treating the movie viewers with utmost respect, it shows that the masses can relate and understand social issues and realities. Bingoleras is a critique of the Catholic Church and its views on women in the society. It presented loud, hypersexual, strong-willed women countering the church’s stereotypes. For a country that cannot separate religion and its state affairs, this film is helpful in making the public realize that women can be more than Virgin Marys. They are not defined by a male-ruled institution that makes people believe that their god is a man.

In the eyes of Brillante Mendoza, we see realism. Painted at the backdrop of his films (Serbis, Kaleldo, Kinatay, and others) is the grim reality of the Philippines. In this 2014 movie, he looks into the seldom discussed topics of childbirth, Islamic polygyny, and women. Through an ensemble of outstanding cast, he focuses his camera to the Badjao people living in the southernmost part of the country and their women’s survival in a Muslim community.

Life is a gift and those who are gifted with it should eternally feel blessed. But what if this life is not asked for, what if this life was a product of incestuous rape or teenage casual sex? Ang Huling Chacha ni Anita discusses this dilemma alongside the women sandwiched in between. It brings to the big screen a much-debated topic in a patriarchal Catholic society.
