We have seen the surge of women in lead, even titular, roles in the recent years. In a way, they are a sign of progress for women inclusion in the field of cinema.

Meanwhile, it is essential to examine further how women, much like other vulnerable sectors of society, are depicted in films. Is their inclusion in cinema empowering? Is the use of their image revolutionary? Does the cinematic work support the plight of women?

In this video essay, we look at how Bliss uses the image of a woman in a psycho-thriller narrative. Particularly, we discuss how the film depicts a woman as a protagonist while also silences her and deems her helpless.

While Philippine films have this unfounded addiction on weddings (see Straight to the Heart), we limit the discussion of death on horror stories. Buhay Habangbuhay offered an alternative depiction of death and the afterlife and suggested that they are capable of broadening the discussion of love, relationship, and life. Despite disappointing visual effects, this film appeals to the crowd for being new and refreshing. It is effective in offering a breath of fresh air in a genre that offers only two possibilities – horrific or comedic.

Here is a film that will end the infidelity epidemic in cinemas. Any movie, post-Etiquette, that will mention the words, ‘affair,’ ‘other woman,’ or ‘mistress’ would be considered null and void. Etiquette for Mistresses does not deny that movie productions have abrasively fed us up with stories on adultery and unfaithfulness; rather, it embraces the idea, banks on it, and flaunts the many differing perspectives of being a woman at the backyard of a matrimonial home.
