We have seen the surge of women in lead, even titular, roles in the recent years. In a way, they are a sign of progress for women inclusion in the field of cinema.

Meanwhile, it is essential to examine further how women, much like other vulnerable sectors of society, are depicted in films. Is their inclusion in cinema empowering? Is the use of their image revolutionary? Does the cinematic work support the plight of women?

In this video essay, we look at how Bliss uses the image of a woman in a psycho-thriller narrative. Particularly, we discuss how the film depicts a woman as a protagonist while also silences her and deems her helpless.

The society defines women as mothers. Surely, nothing is wrong with choosing to raise your children, setting aside your own career, and staying inside the house to do the “dirty” works. But, when you choose otherwise, you are seen as useless, incompetent, and un-womanly. This 2014 film talks on how being a wife and a mother are more often than not prescribed roles. It is a story on how a woman courageously left the situation she thinks she does not deserve. Her tale is told on a backdrop of the dying shoe industry of Marikina.

It is difficult to imagine Director Jerrold Tarog pre-Heneral Luna. Looking at his past film Sana Dati, one can notice how he matured as a director in terms of technical directing, plot development, and character presentation. Far different from his recent (and highly successful) film, this movie is profound in its story but lacks in visual display. And for movies to be movies, they are to be visual pleasantries, if not, we might as well just go back to the lost art of radio dramas.

We are all story-tellers meddling with history. Our reading of the past is as personal as our preference of what is good and bad. The makers of Heneral Luna boldly write history from their own perspective without question or doubt. Banking on ingenious script, charismatic humor, and chic cinematography, the movie stomps its feet hard and readily marches forward.
