By Heinrich Domingo

Seklusyon begins with an interesting story. It is set in the 1940s, with religion and mysticism luring viewers to dip into its narrative. But as it progresses, this inviting story turns into a murky narrative that engulfs the viewers to a mar of confusion and disappointment. It is a story coming in so strong but failing to land with a solid end.

Ever since The Breakup Playlist, Dan Villegas has been on a short list of rom-com directors whose work exudes originality in content and structure. He made us reminisce on past romances in The Breakup Playlist and learn when to let go and love again in English Only, Please. In his 2015 MMFF entry, #WalangForever, it would seem that he still strives to achieve novelty in his narrative. The only difference of this new film from the others is that it struggles to find a consistent ambiance and a believable story that could merit itself a Best Film Award.

This time, director Antoinette Jadaone bit more than she can chew. Her magic can only go so far in bringing the best out of a problematic plot and an ensemble of lowly to mediocre talents. With all these, All You Need is Pag-ibig ended up as a mishmash of incompetent cast, lame script, and messy plot.

Honor Thy Father is a mine of gold for cinephiles who have been patiently digging for something good in an insurmountable mound of trashy MMFF collection. It completes the checklist of an outstanding film – intricate storyline, enticing cinematography, and empathic acting.

Once there was a budding comedienne with sheer talent paired with timely opportunity. She was an instant celebrity for the viewing crowd saw in her the revolution against boring, repetitive, and slapstick comedy. Hers was an innovative and ingenious style that promised to end the tasteless humor of the thriving sexist macho comedians before her. She debuted her plight with a movie discussing gender equality and LGBT rights. As the year goes on, she reenters the club with new sets of plot that goes worse each year. It is the story of Vice Ganda, her revolution, her rise to fandom and her eventual fall to the profit-driven movie industry.
