We tend not to like things that remind us of our embarrassing pasts. Either we cringe remembering them or we simply outgrow them. 1st Sem takes no shame in telling an unpretentious story from a too simple conflict. It looks back into one of the awkward phases in growing up – the entry to college life. Despite struggling to achieve a clean storyline, it is an effective comedy that turns nostalgia into family melodrama.

London Has Fallen begins with snippets of news sound bites on various terrorist- or insurgency-related attacks. One of the last news snippets to be audible is the story of the SAF 44. The following scene takes place in Pakistan, where the son of arms dealer Aamir Barkawi returns home. They attend a wedding, which the United States government then bombs via drone strike.

In the eyes of Brillante Mendoza, we see realism. Painted at the backdrop of his films (Serbis, Kaleldo, Kinatay, and others) is the grim reality of the Philippines. In this 2014 movie, he looks into the seldom discussed topics of childbirth, Islamic polygyny, and women. Through an ensemble of outstanding cast, he focuses his camera to the Badjao people living in the southernmost part of the country and their women’s survival in a Muslim community.

When you fear and feel powerless, create an art work they say. Shout your advocacy through artistry, through beauty, through cinema. But what if, you cannot comprehend art. What is artistic expression to you if you are hungry in the middle of the night, if you are landless all your life, if you have to watch your sick children die? They are the Sama D’laut group, the subject of Director Luisito Ignacio’s film Laut. Seen on the big screen is the reeking condition of a displaced community and their constant fight to continue living.

Humans do not exist in the world of Zootopia. Instead, mammals have evolved and have found a way to live among each other. Predator or prey, it doesn’t matter; everyone gets along – at least that’s what they say. There is much more to this mammal-inhabited world.
