Baka Siguro Yata from beginning to end was testing the waters to seek for effective punch lines. Sometimes it tickles the funny bone but often times become too politically incorrect to be laughed at. The film subtly denounces homosexuality, vilifies abortion, and stands for sexism. With its too long stay in the waters, the film turned out to be too saggy, wet, and unappealing.

The cinema stands between the real and imagined. While it is a reflection of reality, its art usually requires creative alteration to appeal to the crowd. It is a challenge then for filmmakers to tell a beautiful unadulterated story. Dahling Nick embodies this critical position of cinema and proves that it can be done. Largely helped by its naturally lovable subject, it turned out to be one of the most outstanding docu-dramas that we have seen in the recent years.

After Jim Libiran’s Ninja Party brouhaha, it is difficult to watch again an independent film that speaks of house parties. Yet, Director Jill Singson Urdaneta proved that he can tackle more than alcohol and women’s breasts. His film brings the audience into a psychedelic experience brought by the excessive use of drugs. Through its simple yet effective method, the crowd is given a first-hand experience of being on cloud nine.

In the famous words of Chef Gusteau in our Disney-favorite Ratatouille, “not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.” Anyone has the chance to create good films but not all those who try can create one. Actor turned director Mike Magat is laudable for courageously joining the director’s club. After all, filmmaking is exclusive for the brave of hearts. Yet, it seems like his audience have to pay for his inexperience. His film Isang Hakbang joins the rank of the worst films made last year.

A little girl living alone with her guardian just turned nine years old. They live in a shabby nipa hut placed in the middle of a vast rice field. On her birthday, the old gay man brings her to the city to buy ice cream. There, they met a barangay captain’s friend who was kind enough to invite them to his party. Little do they know that the man will give Narra her worst birthday present.
