It is often easy to judge movies through looking into two primary aspects; production value and the validity of message. Through the years, the cinema has developed in a way that most visually beautiful movies bear good stories. In contrast, technically poor films bear crappy plots. This, in a way, makes film criticism easy. Then comes Trumbo. We see a film made near perfect by its outstanding main cast, commendable editing, and brilliant screenplay but it is problematic in its version of history. While we are mesmerized by its exquisite storytelling, the story it tells is somehow repulsing. Trumbo inspires ambivalence in its audience.

Queer cinema is often associated with a coming-of-age theme that portrays gay characters as sexual creatures whose libido cannot be controlled. In popular cinema, gay men are represented by Brokeback Mountain and gay women by Blue is the Warmest Colour, both known for their raunchy sex scenes. Carol’s entry changes the narrative. It offers a glimpse of a gay relationship devoid of stereotypes – that lesbians can still be mothers, that there is no need for a “masculine” figure in lesbian relationships, and that even old women can come out. It tells a lesbian love story as simply a tale of two people falling for each other.

With 19 Oscars nominations, three of which she won, Meryl Streep has gained the nod of critics and the public alike. Her splendid acting career does not only come from her capability to show the right emotion in the camera but also from her ability to be versatile on roles she portrays. In her most recent film, Streep gives us a cool rocker persona behind a mother who chose to abandon her children. Despite a slight flop on musical parts and a mediocre plot, Ricki and the Flash offers us a Meryl Streep performance that shouldn’t be missed.

Realities are to be portrayed as real. Today’s movies based on actual life events tend to romanticize stories and repackage realities. In order to create a heart-pounding action-packed epic film, the plot is exaggerated, musical scoring is overdone, and characters are portrayed as fearless heroes. Spotlight takes another route and tells its story as is. It turns a repulsing story into an exciting drama sans loud cries and tragic confrontations. This movie allows viewers to focus more on the revelation it is about to unfold rather than on the shimmering images flashed on the big screen.
